How to find your personal style

Written by Sherre Atkins August, 20th 2020

Personal Style is defined as self-expression through fashion; unique while encouraging individuality. It’s a way to reflect your inner confidence outwardly. “It’s an artistic expression of you, displayed through your wardrobe.” Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak. What do you want to say through your style?  Keep in mind to “dress the way you want to be addressed.”

When it comes to developing , finding and discovering your personal style, there are a few key points to help guide you along the way. Let’s talk about it!

  1. Identify what you’re naturally drawn to:

Pay attention to specific patterns, colors, materials or textures that you see a lot of in your existing or dream wardrobe such as plaid, camouflage, stripes, silk, tulle, denim, leather, bright colors, florals, etc… If you gravitate to one of these more so than the other, you’re on your way to discovering and developing what sets you apart in style!

2. Identify Your Signature Style:

Signature Style is “when someone thinks of that (see #1 for a reference) they think of you.” Whether it’s a hair style(s) you wear, accessories you rock or maybe your shoe game is on point. How you coordinate what I mentioned above and incorporate #1 into the mix, creates your signature style.

3. Identify your style type:

A style type is a way of categorizing the unique way specific pieces of clothing are paired together, which creates a certain look and vibe . There are sooooo many different style types out there such as: Edgy, Streetwear, Ultra Feminine, Trendy, Classic, Bohemian, Vintage, Sporty/Athleisure, Dressy, Business Wear, Casual Chic, Preppy, Minimalist, Modern and more!  I’m going to focus on three. Some of you may identity with one more so than the other but you may find yourself identifying with more than one which is totally fine. That my dear makes you uniquely you! Mix, match and make it fun. There are no rules (besides modesty 😉) when it comes to style & fashion.

So I’m going to focus on 3 out of the 14  style types I mentioned. Girly/Ultra Feminine, Streetwear and Sporty/Athleisure. As a helpful hint let Pinterest inspire you and assist you in finding what you like and make it your own.

Once you develop your personal style you can incorporate any style type for any occasion. That’s the fun of expressing yourself  through making your wardrobe a unique expression of you! When experimenting with your style be sure to keep modesty in mind! Although you’re expressing your authenticity and uniqueness also remember that you’re representing God as well. Be sure to take into consideration fit and what flatters your unique body type. So let your style speak in a society that says blend in,  be you, be bold, be confident and Stand Out 💕
