Excellence and Discipline

By SOS Middle and high

We hope you didn’t forget about what we learned during SOS Night! If you did, or missed out

this time here’s a quick recap!

Philippians 4:13 (I can do all things through him who strengthens me.). Since God is the foundation of everything we do, we must do ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST!

Our director Charity spoke to us about keeping God as the foundation of everything we do. She

shared about how she as a teenager started off her relationship with God by reading scripture and praying on the bus in the mornings. Then her time with God developed over time. The key is

doing your best to start off your day with God and He will meet you where you are.

Here’s a few tips to keep God as your foundation:

- Reading a devotional/scripture daily. It always helps to go over your notes and scriptures that

you learn from church on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s.

- Praying/speaking to GOD daily.

- Beginning your day acknowledging God

- Knowing that God is the center of everything you do. Including your daily activities, sports,

school, etc. Everything should be done through Christ! All things were made by God for God.

Work, Life, & Social Balance Tips

- Ways to cope with stress before getting overwhelmed.

- Putting a plan in place so you can successfully win the day (journaling, using a calendar, etc,,).

- Making quiet time a priority.

Academic: Studying Tips and Habits

-Setting aside a time and place away from distractions to get work done.

-Use a planner and cross out things that are on their to-do list.

-Not to try to tackle the biggest things first, but go for the little things because they add up.

-Use a brain dump, which can be used as a study tool.

-We helped the girls come up with a plan to improve their grades and tackle big assignments that are time consuming.

Hair, Style, and Modesty Tips

-How you represent yourself (the way you dress, language and countenance, how you walk and talk) determines how people treat you, whether it seems or not.

-How you present yourself to God is also a reflection of your devotion to Him.

-Sometimes you have to "fake it til you make it" while you allow God to do a new work in you. Progress and change does not happen overnight -- but stay consistent!

-PREPARATION is key when it comes to consistency and discipline! You will not always like going the extra step, but it is worthwhile.

-Be INTENTIONAL! Motivation to be your best self and strive for excellence does not just

happen. You must prepare. You will not always feel motivated, but with consistency, you will begin to develop discipline to stay the course.

-Mindset is key! What you think about yourself will reflect in how you carry yourself and how you treat others.

-Fast from the things that tempt you to not be your best. If you struggle with dressing modestly, don’t follow half-naked IG models. If you struggle with cussing, don’t listen to explicit or secular content. Be mindful of the things you consume because you will repeat those things. whether you realize it or not. You are a reflection of who/what you involve yourself with the most (i.e. friends, video games, social media, etc.).

-Find sources to focus on -- and not just on social media. For example, I used to struggle with how I carried myself as a young woman. But the more I got involved with church, the more I would see Co-Pastor (even if from a distance) and I would observe how gracious she is. Her mannerisms, etc. Through observations and being intentional about who I watch/follow, has helped me to fine-tune some areas.

Organization and Cleanliness Tips

-Discussed the benefits of organizing and utilizing a monthly or daily planner, how writing or entering appointments, assignments, and plans in a planner of some type can help avoid missing important events.

-We talked about the benefits of home organization. We went over examples of keeping a clean living space such as putting your clothes in storage bins according to seasons and how those bins can be placed in closets, basements or attics to keep your room free of clutter.
